I think it's indicative of the collapse of society. Now we see that Japan has not only an uber-low birth rate but also unhousebroken cats because women refuse to get married and instead spend all their time at work or at the mall--men too (metrosexuals).
Human civilization can subliminate all other animal and plant populations on the crust of a planet, yet individual humans cannot care for the domesticated predators that helped us take over the world (by protecting our grain from disease-bearing vermin).
